Default Wazz coaching thread

Hi guys, I'm wazz - experienced PLO coach.

Credentials:

For the last three and a half years online PLO has been the main source of my income, with the odd donkament score and something like 5-10 hours of live play per week (mostly £1/2 NLHE or PLO cash with just under a hundred hours of profitable £5/5). My PC is bust so I've had to move back to my laptop in June of 2009 - here are my stats since then:

About 15% of that is HU, my true 6-max stats over this sample are 28/20, though I've hovered from 38/30 down to 20/18 and back up to a happy median now.

I've been making PLO videos for cardrunners for almost two years now, two of which have an average rating of 9.8 over 78 ratings total.

I've been coaching over the same period, with over 30 clients. All have been more than satisfied. Previous students include Jeans (EPT winnar) and Ike (Isaac Haxton).

I've written a few articles on PLO for a UK poker magazine, Poker Player, and ongoing articles for Cardplayer.

The long and short of it is that I'm a great coach for a few reasons:

1) I'm a good poker player. I understand poker theory and the underlying maths at a high level.

2) I'm a very good communicator - once I've seen what your leaks are, I can quickly and efficiently explain to you how and why it's a leak as well as how to plug it.

For evidence of the above two points, please search my posts.

3) I've been through many of the psychological and business problems that you may be facing right now, putting me in a better position to help you with those problems than a Barry Greenstein/Patrik Antonius type who was born to be even-keeled and sensible. Whether it's bankroll-management, tilt control, or any of the other possible 'soft-game' leaks you might have, I've likely been through it and will be able to help.

Pricing

My rates are currently $300/hour. Discounts are available: if you buy 5 hours in advance, you get 10% off, scaling up to 15% off for 10 hours.

If you can prove to me your regular stakes are $100PLO or lower, my rates are $200/hour with the same discount rate.

If you get 5 hours or more, I will make it a point to help you out on AIM/MSN/Skype/e-mail out of our coaching hours, within reason of course.

If you live in or near London (or want to fly me out to you, as one student did last year!), you have the option of getting face-to-face coaching, which I feel is good value.

If you recommend me to a friend, you get 1 more hour of coaching for every 5 hours that he gets.

Payment is accepted on FTP or Stars.

No refunds! Unless you have a very good sob story and I'm in a particularly generous mood.

Coaching Methods:

Coaching is done using Skype to communicate (you'll need a working headset) and teamviewer or mikogo to swap screens.

Before we start coaching, I want you to tell me about yourself. Everything relevant to you as a poker player - how long have you been playing? Do you play for a living? What is or has been your main game? What stakes? How many tables? Winrate? Which sites, screennames? What are your strengths and weaknesses as a poker player? Same question, but as a PLO player? What specifically do you hope to get out of my coaching? Include anything else you think might be relevant.

I want you to treat our first hour together as if you're recording your own instructional PLO video. Play as many tables as you're comfortable with while talking - for most students this is 4 or fewer. Explain your decisions while you make them, even if they seem trivial - 'I'm opening this hand because it's a good hand', 'all signs point to 3bet here - opener is a fish, button is tight, blinds are good players and I can call a 4bet, though he's opening so wide I'm not expecting him to 4bet often at all', 'I think I'm gonna go for 3 streets of value with this Q-flush, this villain is suspicious and has caught me bluffing before', 'I'm gonna fire one c-bet here and give up unless I make xxx hand', 'this river seems like a pretty standard bet-fold, I'm reasonably sure this guy is incapable of bluff-raising and will call me pretty wide' etc etc.

For the most part, I'll keep shtum. I might ask you a question from time to time, partly to clarify your thought process on a particular spot or concept. During the last 10 minutes of this session I'll give you my initial thoughts and recommendations for what to work on before the second session.

Before we start our second hour, I want you to send me your last 20k hands. Our second hour will be spent on HEM, analyzing your stats, quantifying your leaks, and dissecting your play in individual hands. At the end of the second hour, as a result, I will know your game and thought process inside out.

How we proceed from there depends on your leaks. Everyone is different and responds better to different coaching methods, so I don't want to be inflexible at this point. We will work out together how best to go about plugging your leaks. The next 3 hours might be spent with me sweating you and discussing individual spots. You might be better off recording a video, compiling lists of hand histories, or I might even ask you to watch me play and discuss my play. There is no point in restricting our options before we know what works!

I'm sometimes available to chat on MSN and AIM - michael_piper8@hotmail.com on both - or michael.piper4 on skype. Be aware that I've recently enforced a rule of 100% radio silence while playing, though - so if you can't catch me on messenger, please email - wazzbot@gmail.com.

Looking forward to coaching you,

wazz/Mike

I can attest to the fact that Micheal understands the game very well and manages to verbalize his ideas clearly- which is important in a good coach.

I've got one question.

Which is the lowest level do you think is worth it to get coaching?

I've had a couple of students who play $25PLO. They were both rolled for higher, though.

It really depends on your current level of ability, bankroll, the amount of time and effort you're willing to put in under your own steam to improve, and how much time you're going to have in the future to play.

So if you're not pro, with no ambitions to go pro, are lazy, and don't have much of a bankroll, you'd be throwing money down the drain getting coaching.

However, if you're going to work hard at the game, have a bankroll for higher limits, are intending to move up but haven't out of humility/self-doubt/pure nittery, intend to go pro and will be able to put in volume, then you should definitely hook up with me even if you're playing PLO10 at the moment.

Man, wish you had decided to do this before I blew thru 50% of my 'roll and now can't afford to!

Maybe in the future. Very kind of you to offer yourself, btw.

Got some coaching from Wazz too -- review on my blog (I have no affiliation with him or whoever).
